St Peter’s is currently supporting a Syrian family who have left their home country because of the war that has been happening since 2011. Working alongside Bristol City Council, a house was prepared for them using donations of furniture, furnishings, toys, books, kitchen equipment, and all sorts of other household items offered by church and community members, and the Ibrahim family of Mum, Dad, and five children were welcomed just before Christmas 2018. Since their arrival we have supported them as they navigate the tricky issues of daily life in a foreign city: financial matters, GP visits, catching a bus, buying food...all with scarcely a word of English.
It has been a huge upheaval for them, not least because one of the children has a serious health condition, but she is receiving treatment not available to her beforehand, and this is a great relief to all. School places have been secured and a kind of settling is happening.
Many people have provided support and encouragement and everyone involved agrees the experience has – and continues to - enrich all our lives.
